RIESENHEMD - At the Edge of Standard Sizes

Tall Men and Clothing Sizes

Living at the Edge of Clothing Sizes If you are a man taller than 1.90 meters or a woman taller than 1.75 meters, you find yourself at the edge of modern clothing sizes. Shopping for fitting clothes often becomes exhausting... You can always opt for custom-made clothing - but this is correspondingly expensive, and not every location has tailors who still practice this art of custom tailoring and stock the appropriate fabrics. Therefore, there's often no alternative but to search for off-the-rack clothing that fits your size. However, this requires knowledge of which clothing size to look for in order to navigate the sometimes confusing world of clothing sizes. A Guide Through the Jungle of Different Clothing Sizes Unfortunately, despite increasing globalization, there is no uniform system of clothing sizes worldwide. Rather, there exists a colorful mix of different standards. The three most important systems are European sizes, international sizes, and American sizes. But even here there are no binding standards - each manufacturer can have their own measurements. The standards are more of a guideline, so it's advisable to check each manufacturer's own size charts. European Sizes European sizes are given in centimeters. The numerical values of European sizes are usually based on chest circumference. An exception is shirt size, which is based on neck circumference in centimeters. Another exception is jeans, which are measured in inches following the US American model. Within the European standard, there are regional differences - for example, a German size 38 is not identical to a French or Italian size 38. Why this is so - we haven't found a truly convincing explanation... International Sizes International sizes use the letters "S" for "small," "M" for "medium," "L" for "large," "XL" for "extra large." The X extends the table downward or upward: XXS or XXL, 3XL, 4XL, etc. American Sizes American sizes use numbers from 0 to 20 for women and numbers 30 to 52 for men. For very tall or very heavy people, the US uses the designations "Tall" and "Big." These abbreviations are as follows: TL, T2L, T3L, T4L, and so on, or B1X, B2X, B3X, and so on. Standards Not Binding The different sizing systems do not represent a binding standard - each manufacturer can have their own measurements. The standards are more of a guideline, so it's advisable to check each manufacturer's own size charts before buying anything. Additionally, you should know or measure your own body measurements. The Problem with Standards Using the Example of Buying a Shirt When buying a shirt, it's important to know the following key measurements: Chest circumference Waist circumference Collar size Sleeve length, as well as your own height. Personally, for example, I am 1.98 m tall, have a chest circumference of 106 cm, a waist of 95 cm, and a collar size of 42 cm; my sleeve length is 72 cm. With these measurements in mind, I can look at the various "standard sizes" to assess which size would probably fit me best: Standard Size Chart for Men's Clothing AmericanSize EuropeanSize Chest Circumference Waist Circumference Height L 52 102-105 90-94 177-182 XL 54 106-109 95-99 180-184 2XL 56 110-113 100-104 182-186 3XL 58 114-117 105-109 184-188 3XL 60 118-121 110-114 185-189 4XL 62 122-125 115-119 187-190 4XL 64 126-128 120-124 191-192 5XL 66 129-132 125-128 193-194 5XL 68 133-136 129-132 195-196 6XL 70 137-140 133-134 197-198 6XL 72 141-144 135-138 199-200 7XL 74 145-148 139-142 201-202 Looking at the table, based on my chest and waist circumference, I should buy an "XL" size. This is normally significantly too short for me at the sleeves and body, since "XL" is intended for men with a height of 177-182 cm. If I were to take "6XL" according to my height, the shirt would be far too wide at the chest and waist. For this reason, so-called "long sizes" have existed for some time: Long Size Chart for Men's Clothing: American European Chest Circumference Waist Circumference Height TL 94 92-95 78-81 178-182 TL 98 96-99 82-85 181-185 T2L 102 100-103 86-89 184-188 T2L 106 104-107 90-93 186-190 T3L 110 108-111 94-98 188-192 T3L 114 111-114 100-104 193-197 T4L 118 115-118 105-109 196-200 T4L 122 119-122 110-114 199-203 If I were to buy a size "106" according to this standard, it should fit at the chest and waist, though the garment may be too short at the body and sleeves. As mentioned, with shirts you also need to consider collar circumference and sleeve length. When measuring the collar, you should leave 1 cm of room. The standard sleeve length is 66 cm. However, manufacturers also offer extra-long sleeves - but this varies greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. Sometimes "extra-long" means 68, 69, 70, 72, 73, 75 cm sleeve length. Here again, you must pay attention to the manufacturer's size chart. More Information... If you want to learn more about the different clothing sizes, we recommend the article on this topic on Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konfektionsgröße#Umrechnung_internationaler_Größen For converting different systems, the following website can help: http://konfektionsrechner.de Our Measurements We at RIESENHEMD Hamburg produce shirts for men from 1.90 meters and above with collar sizes from 41 to 46 cm. The sleeves are longer than standard, with a length of 72 cm. For each collar size, we have our own measurements regarding chest and waist circumference. All shirts are cut longer at the body than standard shirts, meaning with an extra-long torso. We offer our shirts in two fits. First, there is the entire collection in Modern Fit Long for "normal-slim" tall men. These shirts are lightly tapered but not too tight. For very slim tall men, we also offer most models in the Slim Fit Long fit - these shirts are more strongly tapered. For an overview of sizes, see https://www.riesenhemd.de/groessenuebersicht/ Retail Stores Often Have Limited Selection of Oversized and Long Sizes Only regular sizes are available in most stores. Small and larger sizes are rather the exception. But don't panic! Nowadays there are several niche companies, like us, that produce only for tall people (or only for tall women, or only for tall and heavier people), and there are also some traditional companies that have expanded their offerings for tall people, etc., in recent years. To provide an overview in this area and give tall people the opportunity to exchange information, we have opened a group on Facebook - "Tall People Go Shopping". Here, stores are presented, manufacturers mentioned that focus on tall people, and of course experiences are shared. Here is the link
