7 Fashion Tips for Tall Men
Every man wants to feel well-dressed. Today, everything seems permitted, and there are no longer any fixed style guidelines. Nevertheless, there are a few timeless tips on how a man should dress to leave an elegant yet modern impression. At the same time, there are a few special considerations that tall men should keep in mind, which we as manufacturers of shirts for tall men naturally want to address in particular. The following suggestions follow a rather classic style, but ultimately your own personality should always be reflected in the way you dress. Therefore, these tips can only be well-intentioned suggestions. Try them out to see how you feel as a tall man, and ask those around you what suits you... Tip 1: Less is often more - especially for tall men For men, restraint in fashion often pays off. This is especially true for tall men, who stand out simply because of their height. If you combine height with loud color combinations or extravagant clothing, the first impression becomes very attention-seeking - this should really be carefully considered. The fact that less is often more can be seen with jeans - dark blue, not-too-loose jeans suit most men much better than washed-out or frayed models. And as a combination, a classic solid-colored polo shirt or t-shirt is often better than wildly printed or lettered variants. Fashion changes very quickly, and every season has the latest trend. However, you often look much more contemporary and stylish in classic, rather calm combinations than in the fashion that currently seems to be en vogue. And the latest trends are already "out" in the coming season - therefore, it's worth investing your money initially in the classics, which will keep you well-dressed for years. This doesn't mean, of course, that you can't occasionally get a trendy piece of clothing - if it really suits you, and you can possibly accept not wearing it the following year. Tip 2: Eyes open when buying a suit Anyone wearing a well-fitting suit has already won the first impression. A simple model made of dark, quality fabric, single-breasted, two or three buttons on the lapel - you can hardly go wrong with this. And even if it sounds boring - navy blue, light and dark gray combined with white or light blue shirts - if the cut fits, a man comes across as very timelessly elegant - which of course doesn't mean that colored shirts can't also look good with a suit. When trying on a suit, make sure that it fits really well, especially at the shoulders. Alterations to the chest, waist, and sleeves are relatively easy for a tailor to make afterwards, but changing the shoulder area is very complex. Tall men should ensure that the jacket doesn't look too bulky - something slightly tighter at the waist works well for tall men, so the jacket doesn't look like a square of fabric - otherwise, it can easily look very overwhelming on tall men. A 3-button lapel, on the other hand, shortens the appearance - so tall men can wear this well. But a classic 2-button lapel also suits most tall men well. Tall men should be careful with vertical stripes on suits - as beautiful as a pinstripe suit is, it makes tall men appear even taller than they already are - unless the stripes are very subtle. When choosing fabric, it often suits tall men quite well if the fabrics have a small pattern - Herringbone Twill or other fine patterns break up the otherwise large fabric areas and thus appear less imposing on tall men than purely smooth fabrics. Fortunately, adjusting sleeves and legs to the right length is an easy task for a tailor. When choosing trouser length, make sure they rest just above the instep at the front - if they're too long, the trousers will bunch up at the bottom when standing. Tip 3: The smart casual look for the office isn't that difficult Not only on Casual Friday, but increasingly on other days as well, the dress code is no longer a suit - but "Smart Casual". However, there's often uncertainty here - what should you wear to still make a well-groomed impression? The combination of solid-colored, not-too-loose trousers (whether made of wool, cotton, or jeans) with a color-contrasted but also solid-colored sweater always looks very good. Shirts extra long sleeve. Tall men know the problem - buying good-looking and well-fitting clothing often becomes a challenge (see also our article "Living on the Edge of Standard Sizes"). Especially when buying shirts, the problem often quickly becomes "obvious" - the shirt is too short on the body, but above all, the sleeves on standard-size shirts are often not long enough. For standard sizes, the sleeve length is usually 64 cm or 65 cm, depending on the manufacturer - far too little for tall men. But fortunately, there are shirts with extra long sleeves. However, even with extra long sleeves, there are many differences - because what exactly is meant by "extra long sleeve" for shirts? When shopping in fashion stores for men's dress shirts, there is often a small section with "shirts with extra long sleeves." For most manufacturers, this means they offer shirts with a sleeve length of 68 cm, sometimes 69 cm. If you need a sleeve length of 72 cm, it usually becomes very difficult in stores. And honestly - if you're over 1.90 meters tall, you should always buy a sleeve length of 72 cm - because a shirt should reach to the base of the thumb when arms are hanging loosely or extend about one centimeter below the jacket. Living at the Edge of Clothing Sizes If you are a man taller than 1.90 meters or a woman taller than 1.75 meters, you find yourself at the edge of modern clothing sizes. Shopping for fitting clothes often becomes exhausting... You can always opt for custom-made clothing - but this is correspondingly expensive, and not every location has tailors who still practice this art of custom tailoring and stock the appropriate fabrics. Therefore, there's often no alternative but to search for off-the-rack clothing that fits your size. However, this requires knowledge of which clothing size to look for in order to navigate the sometimes confusing world of clothing sizes. A Guide Through the Jungle of Different Clothing Sizes Unfortunately, despite increasing globalization, there is no uniform system of clothing sizes worldwide. Rather, there exists a colorful mix of different standards. The three most important systems are European sizes, international sizes, and American sizes. But even here there are no binding standards - each manufacturer can have their own measurements. The standards are more of a guideline, so it's advisable to check each manufacturer's own size charts. European Sizes European sizes are given in centimeters. The numerical values of European sizes are usually based on chest circumference. An exception is shirt size, which is based on neck circumference in centimeters. Another exception is jeans, which are measured in inches following the US American model. Within the European standard, there are regional differences - for example, a German size 38 is not identical to a French or Italian size 38. Why this is so - we haven't found a truly convincing explanation... International Sizes International sizes use the letters "S" for "small," "M" for "medium," "L" for "large," "XL" for "extra large." The X extends the table downward or upward: XXS or XXL, 3XL, 4XL, etc. American Sizes American sizes use numbers from 0 to 20 for women and numbers 30 to 52 for men. For very tall or very heavy people, the US uses the designations "Tall" and "Big." These abbreviations are as follows: TL, T2L, T3L, T4L, and so on, or B1X, B2X, B3X, and so on. Standards Not Binding The different sizing systems do not represent a binding standard - each manufacturer can have their own measurements. Personally, for example, I am 1.98 m tall, have a chest circumference of 106 cm, a waist of 95 cm, and a collar size of 42 cm; my sleeve length is 72 cm. Tips on Ironing and Storing Men's Shirts
When washing a shirt, the surface becomes rough due to fibers loosening from the fabric, and the shirt wrinkles. Fortunately, shirts can be ironed, because using heat and moisture makes the shirt smooth and presentable to wear again. But how do you iron well and efficiently (because ironing is only moderately enjoyable)? And how do you fold a shirt afterwards if you can't store it hanging on a hanger? Here are a few tips from RIESENHEMD Hamburg on ironing and storing men's shirts, so you can enjoy wearing them more. How to Properly Iron Men's Shirts First: Ironing heat literally burns stains and sweat residue into the fabric, so you should only iron clean, ideally freshly washed clothing. If possible, don't let the shirt dry completely, as it irons better when slightly damp. If the shirt is too dry, you'll need to moisten the shirt with a spray bottle and ideally let it rest in a plastic bag for a few minutes. When ironing: Always move the iron in the direction of the grain, anything else distorts the fabric. You'll achieve better results if you iron with the steam function. Pull the shirt taut while ironing. Use the correct temperature when ironing, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Here's our suggested sequence for ironing a shirt: Start with one of the sleeves. Iron them from inside to outside. The edges are ironed last. For a button cuff, the buttons should be facing up when ironing. For a French cuff or double cuff, make sure the buttonholes lie flat on top of each other. If you have an ironing board, you can iron the sleeves round. Don't iron the cuffs for too long. Then iron the shoulders, using the tip of the ironing board for this. Next, iron the collar from the points inward and not for too long. Iron both sides. If the collar has collar stays, remove them for ironing and insert them again after ironing. Then iron the back panel; here make sure that the back pleats are ironed in evenly. Finally, iron the front of the shirt. Make sure to iron around the buttons. Non-iron and easy-iron shirts come out of the washing machine much smoother, but usually still need to be ironed. Ironing is somewhat easier here; a shirt should be fully ironed in about 3-4 minutes. A regular cotton shirt takes a few minutes longer, depending on the fabric. Should you therefore always only buy "non-iron" and "easy-iron" shirts? That's a matter of taste. A shirt made from 100% cotton without either of these two treatment methods is, in contrast, significantly more breathable because the surface is not sealed with synthetic resins or heat; this means you sweat less or sweat is better wicked outward. When folding, first close the buttons and then lay the shirt face down. Fold the shirt at half the shoulder, then fold it down with the sleeve. Then fold the lower part of the shirt body over the cuffs and fold it one last time; now the lower part of the rectangle should rest at the collar. How to Properly Wash and Dry Shirts
Shirts are everyday items and wear out over time. There are many causes for this – the fabric rubs during wear, for example against the skin at the collar, against facial hair, or against a watch on the wrist. However, the fabric experiences particular "stress" when washing shirts. First signs of wear typically appear after about 15 washes. Stiftung Warentest showed in a 2016 test that after the 30th wash cycle, virtually every shirt shows more or less worn collar tips. Nevertheless, careful washing and drying can help ensure that shirts look good and can be worn for as long as possible. We at RIESENHEMD would like to give you a few tips: When Washing: When washing, pay attention to the care labels. The washing machine should not be too full. Use an appropriate detergent – there are special detergents for delicate fabrics like silk and wool, as well as for white and colored laundry. For cotton shirts, we recommend a temperature between 30°-60° Celsius. Higher temperatures are harder on the fabric, but are more effective against dirt, odor, and bacteria. By the way: The fabrics of our shirts are sanforized – this is a natural finishing process that prevents the fabric from shrinking during washing. When washing, also make sure that a gentle cycle is used for spinning (ideal is 600-800 spin revolutions). Afterwards, don't leave the shirts in the drum for too long. If you turn the shirt inside out, the collar and cuffs can be washed more effectively. If the collar and cuffs are very dirty, you can use a stain spray or pre-wash these parts by hand. If possible, remove the collar stays before washing and reinsert them after ironing. You can wash the shirt with buttons closed or open – there are different opinions on this; we ourselves don't have a particular preference for one or the other option. They dry best when hung up. Remove the shirts from the washing machine as soon as possible and shake them vigorously to avoid unnecessary wrinkling. Sunlight is a natural bleaching agent for white laundry and is particularly recommended for white shirts. Colored laundry, on the other hand, should best be hung indoors – but if you still want to dry your shirt on a line outside, you should at least hang it inside out. We offer shirts with various weaving techniques, such as Poplin (shirts Berlin and Oslo), Oxford (shirts Wien and Madrid), Fil-a-fil (shirts London, Paris), and Herringbone Twill (Zuerich). For each of our shirts, the material, weave type, and fabric grammage are precisely described. An appealing design: Did you know that a shirt has approximately 20 different parts, such as the collar, front and back panels, sleeves, and cuffs? How these parts harmonize together determines the design, which shows significant differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. All shirts from RIESENHEMD Hamburg have a collar that works well with or without a tie. Some of our collars feature removable collar stays that keep the collar in shape. All sleeves have a button above the cuff that prevents the unsightly gaping of the shirt over the arm. The cuffs themselves have two parallel buttons that allow you to vary the cuff width (for example, to wear the shirt with or without a watch). Additionally, all our shirts can be fastened with cufflinks in addition to the sewn-on buttons. Our shirts deliberately omit breast pockets or collar buttons. Our shirts Zuerich, Paris, and London feature an extra-long tail at the back, so the shirt stays tucked in well even after a long day at the office. Our shirt Paris appears very elegant with a French cuff and French placket, making it excellently suited for special occasions. The sleeve length is correct when the cuffs sit between the end of the thumb and the wrist when the arm hangs straight down. When wearing a jacket, the shirt cuff should extend at least one centimeter beyond it. The collar size is correct when, with the buttons fastened, two fingers can still fit comfortably between the shirt collar and neck. Shirts made from 100% cotton should be bought slightly larger, as the shirt reaches its final size only after the 4th or 5th wash. High-quality craftsmanship: The more stitches a seam has, the more durable the shirt. Eight stitches per centimeter is the standard for a good shirt. In high-quality shirts, the armhole is sewn twice. The shoulder yoke (the part covering the shoulders) is often sewn separately in high-quality shirts and with double fabric. All shirts from RIESENHEMD Hamburg feature these quality characteristics: the shirts have a stitch density of eight stitches per centimeter, so your shirt lasts longer.
