After RIESENHEMD selected producers, it was now about finalizing the design of the extra-length men's shirts and selecting the fabrics. A shirt is just a shirt, you think? No, completely wrong! Did you know that a shirt has approximately 20 different parts, such as the collar, front and back, sleeves and cuffs. How these parts harmonize together determines the design, which shows great differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. One thing is set in the RIESENHEMD design - the sleeves are extra-long, 72 cm. And the body is also longer, because our shirts are for tall men from 1.90 meters and up. But - collar, cuffs, buttons, button placket, cut, all of that needs to be defined. And of course the fabrics... The whole thing was a lot of fun, as you can see from the following photos.... We design every shirt with attention to detail, and we focus on sustainability: our shirts are made from high-quality fabrics that last a long time. For our shirts, we have selected truly high-quality fabrics made from 100% European cotton together with our producer, all manufactured in Spain. The first collection is made from Poplin, Fil-a-fil, Oxford and Herringbone Twill fabrics. You can find more about this in the overview of our fabrics.

After long experimentation and fine-tuning, our RIESENHEMD Hamburg logo is finished. We find it modern, powerful, and yet also a little playful. A big thank you to our designer, Ms. Gabrielle Wilhelmi, who worked on the RIESENHEMD Hamburg logo again and again with new ideas and patience. RIESENHEMD Hamburg is a family business and exclusively manufactures extra-length shirts. Our shirts are cut longer front and back, with super extra long 72 cm sleeves. We call our cut Modern Long Fit – neither too wide nor too narrow, suitable for tall, normally slim men. From idea to company foundation
RIESENHEMD Hamburg has actually existed for at least 20 years – at least in our minds. The idea arose from personal need - because when I started working and looking for stylish shirts, I had to realize that for my size (1.97 meters, slim) the selection was very limited. Either the sleeves were too short, or the sleeves fit but the shirt was much too wide. But before my wife and I gathered our courage and launched the "Riesenhemd" project, much water flowed down the Elbe. Now we have founded a company and defined our requirements for how we want to produce shirts. Sustainably produced shirts. As in many other areas of life, environmental awareness and sustainability are gaining importance in the fashion industry. We all own significantly more clothing items today than in the past, and the clothing we buy is often worn only a few times and then quickly discarded or thrown away. The fashion industry is therefore also complicit in the waste of unnecessary resources and in further environmental pollution. Not to mention the sometimes precarious production conditions, low wages in foreign countries, and long transportation routes. RIESENHEMD Hamburg offers exclusive and sustainably produced shirts. Classic-Modern Design As manufacturers, we at RIESENHEMD Hamburg try to do our part for sustainability. That's why we offer you a deliberately limited collection of high-quality, classic-modern shirts for tall men from 1.90 meters and up, which you can wonderfully combine and wear with different styles. It's important to us that our shirts are versatile and can therefore be worn often. You can wear RIESENHEMD shirts on their own or combine them with sweaters, jackets, and various suits. Our models go well with jeans, chinos, and dress pants. In summer, you can wear our shirts open with rolled-up sleeves. In winter with a vest, blazer, and coat. Production in Europe We have also deliberately chosen production in Europe with fabrics manufactured here. RIESENHEMD shirts are produced in Spain according to European environmental and social standards. Our producer is a family business in its second generation. We bring value creation back to Europe. We deliberately avoid using chemicals in all RIESENHEMD shirts that make the fabric wrinkle-free. All our fabrics (100% cotton) are tested and certified for harmful substances according to the strict "OEKO-TEX® – STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX" process. And Much More... Wherever possible, we use various recycled materials in our packaging. Both the plastic wrapper and the cardboard are 100% recycled. We are looking for further ways to reduce our packaging materials as much as possible and are open to innovative ideas. As consumers, we value making sustainability statements in our clothing choices. On one hand, through conscious selection of which clothing items we buy, and on the other hand through good care so that the clothing lasts as long as possible. And when we no longer like a piece of clothing, we give it away, recycle it, or use the fabric for other pieces – because we believe: clothing items don't belong in the trash! Tips on Ironing and Storing Men's Shirts
When washing a shirt, the surface becomes rough due to fibers loosening from the fabric, and the shirt wrinkles. Fortunately, shirts can be ironed, because using heat and moisture makes the shirt smooth and presentable to wear again. But how do you iron well and efficiently (because ironing is only moderately enjoyable)? And how do you fold a shirt afterwards if you can't store it hanging on a hanger? Here are a few tips from RIESENHEMD Hamburg on ironing and storing men's shirts, so you can enjoy wearing them more. How to Properly Iron Men's Shirts First: Ironing heat literally burns stains and sweat residue into the fabric, so you should only iron clean, ideally freshly washed clothing. If possible, don't let the shirt dry completely, as it irons better when slightly damp. If the shirt is too dry, you'll need to moisten the shirt with a spray bottle and ideally let it rest in a plastic bag for a few minutes. When ironing: Always move the iron in the direction of the grain, anything else distorts the fabric. You'll achieve better results if you iron with the steam function. Pull the shirt taut while ironing. Use the correct temperature when ironing, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Here's our suggested sequence for ironing a shirt: Start with one of the sleeves. Iron them from inside to outside. The edges are ironed last. For a button cuff, the buttons should be facing up when ironing. For a French cuff or double cuff, make sure the buttonholes lie flat on top of each other. If you have an ironing board, you can iron the sleeves round. Don't iron the cuffs for too long. Then iron the shoulders, using the tip of the ironing board for this. Next, iron the collar from the points inward and not for too long. Iron both sides. If the collar has collar stays, remove them for ironing and insert them again after ironing. Then iron the back panel; here make sure that the back pleats are ironed in evenly. Finally, iron the front of the shirt. Make sure to iron around the buttons. Non-iron and easy-iron shirts come out of the washing machine much smoother, but usually still need to be ironed. Ironing is somewhat easier here; a shirt should be fully ironed in about 3-4 minutes. A regular cotton shirt takes a few minutes longer, depending on the fabric. Should you therefore always only buy "non-iron" and "easy-iron" shirts? That's a matter of taste. "Non-iron" involves a special, elaborate sealing process for the fabric; here the cotton fibers are treated with synthetic resin using ammonia. With "easy-iron," the shirt is sealed through strong heating, called dry cross-linking. A shirt made from 100% cotton without either of these two treatment methods is, in contrast, significantly more breathable because the surface is not sealed with synthetic resins or heat; this means you sweat less or sweat is better wicked outward. How to Properly Store Men's Shirts Shirts are best stored hanging. If you want to fold them, let them cool for 30 minutes after ironing. When folding, first close the buttons and then lay the shirt face down. Fold the shirt at half the shoulder, then fold it down with the sleeve. When you've done this on both sides, the shirt should have the shape of a long rectangle. Then fold the lower part of the shirt body over the cuffs and fold it one last time; now the lower part of the rectangle should rest at the collar. How to Properly Wash and Dry Shirts
Shirts are everyday items and wear out over time. There are many causes for this – the fabric rubs during wear, for example against the skin at the collar, against facial hair, or against a watch on the wrist. However, the fabric experiences particular "stress" when washing shirts. First signs of wear typically appear after about 15 washes. Stiftung Warentest showed in a 2016 test that after the 30th wash cycle, virtually every shirt shows more or less worn collar tips. Nevertheless, careful washing and drying can help ensure that shirts look good and can be worn for as long as possible. We at RIESENHEMD would like to give you a few tips: When Washing: When washing, pay attention to the care labels. The washing machine should not be too full. Use an appropriate detergent – there are special detergents for delicate fabrics like silk and wool, as well as for white and colored laundry. For cotton shirts, we recommend a temperature between 30°-60° Celsius. Higher temperatures are harder on the fabric, but are more effective against dirt, odor, and bacteria. By the way: The fabrics of our shirts are sanforized – this is a natural finishing process that prevents the fabric from shrinking during washing. When washing, also make sure that a gentle cycle is used for spinning (ideal is 600-800 spin revolutions). Afterwards, don't leave the shirts in the drum for too long. If you turn the shirt inside out, the collar and cuffs can be washed more effectively. If the collar and cuffs are very dirty, you can use a stain spray or pre-wash these parts by hand. If possible, remove the collar stays before washing and reinsert them after ironing. You can wash the shirt with buttons closed or open – there are different opinions on this; we ourselves don't have a particular preference for one or the other option. We would rather not recommend using fabric softener. See also the article "Why Fabric Softener is Often Completely Unnecessary" When Drying: Shirts do not belong in the dryer!!! They dry best when hung up. Remove the shirts from the washing machine as soon as possible and shake them vigorously to avoid unnecessary wrinkling. Sunlight is a natural bleaching agent for white laundry and is particularly recommended for white shirts. Colored laundry, on the other hand, should best be hung indoors – but if you still want to dry your shirt on a line outside, you should at least hang it inside out. When drying indoors, make sure there is sufficient ventilation. By following these rules, you will enjoy your shirts for a long time. How do you recognize a high-quality shirt?
A good shirt is the result of several factors: the use of high-quality fabrics, an appealing design, a good fit, excellent craftsmanship, and of course sustainable production. RIESENHEMD Hamburg produces high-quality shirts for fashion-conscious tall men. The use of high-quality fabrics: High-quality shirt fabrics typically consist almost exclusively of natural fibers, such as cotton, wool, silk, or linen. The length of the fiber also plays a role: the longer the fiber, the more stable and tear-resistant the yarn and ultimately the fabric. There are various weaving techniques that influence the weight of the fabric (weight per unit area g/m2, also called grammage). Fabrics with higher grammage are heavier, more stable, denser, and warmer. All shirts from RIESENHEMD Hamburg are made from 100% European cotton. We offer shirts with various weaving techniques, such as Poplin (shirts Berlin and Oslo), Oxford (shirts Wien and Madrid), Fil-a-fil (shirts London, Paris), and Herringbone Twill (Zuerich). For each of our shirts, the material, weave type, and fabric grammage are precisely described. An appealing design: Did you know that a shirt has approximately 20 different parts, such as the collar, front and back panels, sleeves, and cuffs? How these parts harmonize together determines the design, which shows significant differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. All shirts from RIESENHEMD Hamburg have a collar that works well with or without a tie. Some of our collars feature removable collar stays that keep the collar in shape. All sleeves have a button above the cuff that prevents the unsightly gaping of the shirt over the arm. The cuffs themselves have two parallel buttons that allow you to vary the cuff width (for example, to wear the shirt with or without a watch). Additionally, all our shirts can be fastened with cufflinks in addition to the sewn-on buttons. Our shirts deliberately omit breast pockets or collar buttons. Our shirts Zuerich, Paris, and London feature an extra-long tail at the back, so the shirt stays tucked in well even after a long day at the office. Our shirt Paris appears very elegant with a French cuff and French placket, making it excellently suited for special occasions. The shirts Berlin and Oslo have an applied button placket and a second, color-coordinated fabric on the inside of the collar and cuffs that harmonizes beautifully with the main fabric of the shirt. A good fit: A high-quality shirt should fit well on the body - not too wide, not too tight, not too long or too short. The shirt fits ideally on the body when it lies against the chest without the fabric being too taut. The length of the shirt is sufficient when it doesn't slip out of the pants at the back or sides. The sleeve length is correct when the cuffs sit between the end of the thumb and the wrist when the arm hangs straight down. When wearing a jacket, the shirt cuff should extend at least one centimeter beyond it. The collar size is correct when, with the buttons fastened, two fingers can still fit comfortably between the shirt collar and neck. Shirts made from 100% cotton should be bought slightly larger, as the shirt reaches its final size only after the 4th or 5th wash. RIESENHEMD Hamburg produces shirts for tall men from 1.90 meters and above. We offer two fits: Slim Fit Long and Modern Fit Long. Our Slim Fit shirts are suitable for tall, very slim men, with more pronounced tapering and an overall slimmer cut. Our Modern Fit shirts are also tapered but slightly wider than the Slim Fit models - for the "normal-slim" man. All shirts from RIESENHEMD Hamburg have a 72 cm sleeve length. We produce in collar sizes from 39 to 43 (Slim Fit) and 41 to 44 (Modern Fit). You can view an overview of our sizing here. High-quality craftsmanship: The more stitches a seam has, the more durable the shirt. Eight stitches per centimeter is the standard for a good shirt. In high-quality shirts, the armhole is sewn twice. The shoulder yoke (the part covering the shoulders) is often sewn separately in high-quality shirts and with double fabric. All shirts from RIESENHEMD Hamburg feature these quality characteristics: the shirts have a stitch density of eight stitches per centimeter, so your shirt lasts longer. The armhole of our shirts is sewn twice, and the yoke is made of double fabric. Sustainability: Producing sustainably is not simple. One must consider nature and its burden from the use of pesticides and carbon dioxide, but also the resources consumed, such as water and electricity. And the social standards of the people involved in making the shirt.
