Professional Ironing – The Right Way
Preparation
Only iron clean shirts, as heat can permanently set stains. It's best to iron shirts while they are still slightly damp – lightly dampen dry shirts beforehand. Follow the manufacturer's temperature recommendations and use steam for smoother results.
The Optimal Ironing Order
Iron from the inside out. For button cuffs: buttons facing up. For French cuffs: lay buttonholes flat on top of each other. Iron edges last and don't stay too long in one spot to avoid shiny marks.
- Work with the tip of the iron and pull the fabric taut.
- Iron from the tips inward, smooth both sides, remove collar stays beforehand.
- Iron back pleats evenly, always work in the direction of the grain.
- Work around the buttons, treat the button placket with special care.
Time Required
