Professional Ironing – The Right Way

Preparation

Only iron clean shirts, as heat can permanently set stains. It's best to iron shirts while they are still slightly damp – lightly dampen dry shirts beforehand. Follow the manufacturer's temperature recommendations and use steam for smoother results.

The Optimal Ironing Order

Iron from the inside out. For button cuffs: buttons facing up. For French cuffs: lay buttonholes flat on top of each other. Iron edges last and don't stay too long in one spot to avoid shiny marks.

  1. Work with the tip of the iron and pull the fabric taut.
  2. Iron from the tips inward, smooth both sides, remove collar stays beforehand.
  3. Iron back pleats evenly, always work in the direction of the grain.
  4. Work around the buttons, treat the button placket with special care.

Time Required

Easy-care shirts: approx. 3–4 minutes
Standard cotton: approx. 5–7 minutes
